JATL supports the principle that making research freely available to the public promotes wider dissemination of knowledge, strengthens scholarly communication, supports education, and increases the visibility and potential impact of research.

Open Access Principles

Reader and User Rights

Subject to the applicable license terms and third-party rights, readers and other users may:

• Read and download the full text of published articles.
• Copy, print, and redistribute published material.
• Link to articles and their full text.
• Deposit articles in institutional or subject repositories.
• Use articles for teaching, research, and other lawful purposes.
• Translate, remix, transform, or build upon the material.
• Use published material for commercial purposes when all license conditions are satisfied.
• Index, search, or process article metadata and content using lawful technologies.

Creative Commons License

Reuse under CC BY-SA 4.0 requires users to:

1. Give appropriate credit to the author or authors.
2. Identify JATL as the original publisher and provide the article DOI or URL where available.
3. Provide a link to the CC BY-SA 4.0 license.
4. Indicate whether the original material has been changed.
5. Distribute adapted material under CC BY-SA 4.0 or a compatible license.
6. Avoid imposing additional legal or technological restrictions that prevent others from exercising the rights permitted by the license.

Copyright Ownership

Authors retain copyright in their articles and grant JATL the non-exclusive right of first publication. Open access and Creative Commons licensing do not transfer copyright ownership from authors to the journal or to readers.

Author Self-Archiving

Authors may deposit and distribute the submitted version, accepted manuscript, and published version of their articles through:

• Institutional repositories.
• Subject or disciplinary repositories.
• Personal or institutional academic websites.
• Researcher-profile platforms.
• Other lawful scholarly archives and services.

No embargo period is imposed by JATL. When sharing the published version, authors should include the complete citation, DOI or article URL, identify JATL as the original publisher, and retain the applicable license statement.

Third-Party Material

The article’s open license applies only to material for which the authors or journal are authorized to grant permission. Tables, photographs, maps, figures, datasets, instruments, or other third-party materials may be subject to separate copyright or licensing conditions.

Material excluded from the article’s Creative Commons license must be clearly identified through an appropriate credit line. Users are responsible for obtaining additional permission when required for their intended use.

Discoverability and Indexing

JATL makes article metadata available to scholarly discovery and communication services where technically and legally appropriate. Metadata may be harvested, indexed, linked, deposited, and distributed through DOI services, search engines, repositories, libraries, indexing databases, and other scholarly infrastructure.

The journal encourages accurate citation, persistent linking through DOI, and lawful reuse that increases the visibility and accessibility of published research.

Preservation and Continued Access

JATL seeks to maintain continued public access to published content through its journal platform and applicable digital-preservation arrangements. Published articles form part of the permanent scholarly record.

License Applicable to Individual Articles

The copyright and licensing statement displayed on each article page and within the published article determines the applicable reuse terms for that article.

Articles published under an earlier agreement or different license remain subject to the terms stated at the time of publication unless the relevant rights holder formally authorizes a change.
