AN ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM IN OPERATION FORTUNE: RUSE DE GUERRE (2023) FILM
Abstract
In communication, speakers do not always comply with conversational rules, as language use is influenced by context. In certain situations, these rules are deliberately flouted to convey implied meanings or implicatures. This phenomenon is also reflected in film dialogues, particularly in spy-action films that involve strategic interactions and high-risk situations. This study aims to identify the types of conversational maxims flouted by the characters in the action film Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre (2023). This study employs a qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The data were obtained from the characters’ utterances in the film that contain instances of flouting conversational maxims. The data analysis is based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle, which includes the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. The findings show that all four conversational maxims are flouted by the characters in the film, with a total of nineteen data identified. The flouting of the maxim of relation occurs most frequently, appearing in twelve data, with implicatures that function to control the situation and deliver coded meanings. It is followed by the maxim of manner, which appears in three data and generates implicatures that function to establish boundaries, show sarcasm, and deliver ideas indirectly. The maxim of quantity appears in two data, with implicatures that function to convince the listener and assert power through indirect threat. Meanwhile, the maxim of quality appears in two data, generating implicatures that function to express emotional states and maintain self-image.
