Abstract

Worm infections due to Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) remain a significant public health problem, especially in children aged 5–14 years in areas with limited sanitation, risky environmental conditions, and low levels of family health literacy. Mothers have an important role as the main caregiver in shaping hygiene behavior and disease prevention in children, so that maternal empowerment through health education is an important preventive strategy. This activity aims to analyze the effectiveness of booklet-based health education in improving maternal knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to the prevention of worms in children. Community service activities were carried out in the assisted areas of the University of Muhammadiyah Palembang using a pre-experimental design of one group pretest involving 95 mothers. Interventions are carried out through health counseling using booklet media, presentations, and interactive discussions. Data were collected using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge (mean 65.83 to 99.42), attitude (63.95 to 99.50), and behavior (65.37 to 100.00) with a p value of < 0.001. All participants experienced changes to the good category after the intervention. These findings show that booklet-based education is effective in improving maternal health literacy and preventive behavior. This education has important implications as a sustainable promotive and preventive strategy to strengthen family-based deworming prevention and improve the health of children in the community.
