The Sungai Bawang Cultural Village in Kutai Kartanegara serves as a preservation site for traditional Dayak Kenyah music and dance, particularly the Udoq (Hudoq Kiba) performance. Held weekly at the Pemung Madun Traditional Lamin, this dance originally functioned as a ritual to ward off pests during rice cultivation but has transitioned into a form of entertainment while retaining its traditional musical accompaniment—limited to the Tawek (gong) and Jatung Utang. This functional shift reflects the cultural adaptation strategies of the Dayak Kenyah community.
Using qualitative methods and descriptive analysis, this study examines the musical structure of Udoq through figures, motifs, and phrasing, as well as its sociocultural transformation based on C.A. van Peursen’s cultural strategy theory. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis reveals three evolutionary stages: (1) the mythical phase, where Hudoq Kiba was a sacred ritual tied to ancestral beliefs; (2) the ontological phase, marking its shift to entertainment and education; and (3) the functional phase, where it now supports cultural tourism, the creative economy, and annual events. These findings highlight the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity, demonstrating how cultural practices can retain significance while adapting to contemporary contexts.References
