Father–Daughter Relationship: Father Involvement and Romantic Beliefs among Emerging Adult Women

Abstract

Emerging adulthood is a developmental phase marked by the formation of intimate romantic relationships. During this period, individuals begin to develop romantic beliefs that influence how they perceive and engage in romantic relationships. One factor often assumed to contribute to these beliefs is father involvement, as fathers may represent an early relational figure for daughters. This study aimed to examine the effect of father involvement on romantic beliefs among emerging adult women. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. Participants consisted of 202 emerging adult women aged 18–25 years, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Father Involvement Scale (FIS) and the Romantic Beliefs Scale (RBS). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression and independent samples t-test with IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The results showed that father involvement did not have a significant effect on romantic beliefs among emerging adult women (F = 2.131, p = 0.098). However, partial analysis indicated that the engagement dimension had a significant positive effect on romantic beliefs (β = 0.357, p = 0.032), whereas the accessibility and responsibility dimensions did not show significant effects. Additional analysis revealed significant difference in romantic beliefs based on relationship status, with women who had a romantic partner reporting higher romantic beliefs than those who did not. These findings suggest that romantic beliefs are shaped by multiple factors and are more strongly influenced by direct romantic experiences than by father involvement alone.
