Abstract

Local wisdom plays an important role in preserving the traditional shifting cultivation practices of the Dayak Kenyah Lepo Tepu community. This study aimed to identify forms of local wisdom associated with traditional shifting cultivation in Punan Malinau Village, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The research was conducted from May to July 2025 using a descriptive qualitative approach. Twelve informants were selected through purposive sampling based on their knowledge and experience in traditional farming practices. Data were collected through field surveys and analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings identified seven forms of local wisdom associated with traditional cultivation practices: senguyun, pom, uma’, jekau, bekan, banit, and tana’ ulen. The community traditionally plants upland rice between late July and early August and harvests it in March. These practices encompass the determination of planting periods, traditional ceremonies, customary land management, harvest-sharing arrangements, and various stages of upland rice cultivation. While some traditions remain in practice, others have gradually been discontinued. The findings highlight the role of indigenous knowledge and customary regulations in sustaining traditional agricultural practices within the local community.
