Abstract

This study aims to determine the comparative size of sediments at Tanah Merah beach, Samboja subdistrict, Kutai Kartanegara regency and at the Manggar beach, Manggar Baru Village, Balikpapan in the East of Balikpapan City. The study was conducted in November 2018 by taking water-based sediment sampling with 6 point sediment sampling stations with a total of 30 sample points - each station has 5 sample points based on two beaches namely Tanah Merah beach and Manggar beach. Measurements of Coastal Slope, current and wave speed are carried out at each station. Analysis of sediment characteristics was carried out by granulometry analysis method based on the Wentworth scale. In general, the basic sediment distribution patterns of the Tanah Merah coast and Manggar beach are both composed by clay to sand sized sediments. Sediment types based on grain size are coarse sand, medium sand, fine sand, dust and clay and dominated by fine sand distribution at each sampling point. The slope of the coast in Tanah Merah beach had an Average Grade Percentage of 12 (%), while the slope of the coast in the Manggar beach had an Average Value of the Percentage of 8 (%). Current velocity at Tanah Merah coast station 1 is obtained 0.07 m / sec, at station 2 0.09 m / sec and station 3 0.08 m / sec. While the speed at the Manggar beach station 4 was obtained 0.11 m / sec, at station 5 0.09 m / sec and station 6 0.11 m / sec. And the wave height at the coast of Tanah Merah Station 1 is 12.58 cm, Station 2 is 11.20 cm and Station 3 is 14.19 cm. While the wave height at the Manggar beach station 4 is 28.38 cm, at station 5 23.44 cm and station 6 26.94 cm.
