Application of the Infiltration Method to Assess the Hydrogeological Characteristics of the Balikpapan Formation and Pulau Balang Formation
Abstract
The availability and sustainability of groundwater resources constitute a highly critical issue amid increasing water demand driven by several factors, such as population growth, industrial activities, and large-scale infrastructure development. This is particularly evident in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan Province, which also serves as one of the supporting cities for the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), East Kalimantan.This study aims to measure the infiltration rate at various locations within the Balikpapan Formation and the Pulau Balang Formation. Through the measurement of infiltration rates, this research is expected to provide information regarding the level of permeability and the groundwater recharge potential in the area.The research method will be conducted through a field-based approach by applying infiltration measurements using a double-ring infiltrometer, which functions to determine infiltration rates at several data collection points within the Balikpapan Formation and the Pulau Balang Formation. These infiltration measurements will be complemented by outcrop observations in the surrounding study area.The obtained infiltration data will then be analyzed quantitatively to evaluate the level of permeability and infiltration capacity at the research locations within the Balikpapan Formation and the Pulau Balang Formation. The results of this study are expected to be representative and provide comprehensive information regarding infiltration rates, soil permeability levels, as well as the identification of zones with high recharge potential that can be utilized for groundwater management.
