Universitas Mulawarman merupakan satu-satunya universitas negeri yang ada di Provinsi Kalimantan Timur. Universitas ini memiliki 4 lokasi kampus yang digunakan dalam aktifitas akademik. Salah satu kampus yang terbesar dan menjadi pusat kegiatan akademik adalah Kampus Gunung Kelua Universitas Mulawarman. Lokasi kampus Gunung Kelua yang begitu luas serta lokasi bangunan yang saling berjauhan mempersulit para civitas akademica dan masyarakat umum untuk mengetahui lokasi-lokasi serta informasi batas wilayah di kampus Gunung Kelua. Sistem Informasi Geografis (SIG) dewasa ini mengalami perkembangan pesat sesuai dengan kebutuhan manusia dalam pemetaan suatu tempat. Pada penelitian ini, telah dibuat sebuah peta interaktif yang dapat menampilkan peta batas wilayah kampus Gunung Kelua Universitas Mulawarman Google Maps API berbasis web.
